Search is no longer just about words
For years, paid search has been a game of keywords. You bid on a term, you appear in a list, and the shopper decides whether to click. That model still works, but it is no longer the whole picture. Pinterest has just announced Visual Search Ads, a performance format that lets advertisers appear as a highlighted answer when someone searches using an image rather than a typed phrase. The company presented it during Pinterest Presents, its annual event for advertisers, and the message is clear: discovery is becoming visual, and purchase intent is travelling with it.

For shops and brands selling online, this is worth paying attention to. It signals where ecommerce advertising is heading, and it raises a practical question: is your catalogue ready to be found when the search starts with a photo instead of a word?
Why visual intent matters for online shops
Pinterest users carry out a huge volume of searches every month, and a large share of them are visual rather than textual. More importantly, a significant proportion of those searches come with commercial intent. People are not idly scrolling; they are comparing, saving and shortlisting. Visual Search Ads are designed to sit in that moment, combining keywords with an image-led ad format and linking users straight through to the advertiser's website.
The underlying technology, Pinterest Intelligence, reads images, products, tastes and intent. In practice, this means the platform is trying to understand not just what a person typed, but what they are actually looking for. As Bill Ready, Pinterest's CEO, put it, traditional search advertising has long relied on keywords, but in an AI-driven world people express themselves in far richer ways.
What this means for a PrestaShop or WooCommerce store
If you run a shop on PrestaShop or WooCommerce, the opportunity is less about rushing to a new ad format and more about the fundamentals that make visual discovery possible. AI-driven platforms feed on structured, well-labelled product data. If your catalogue is thin on descriptions, missing attributes or inconsistent in how it names colours, materials and categories, visual search engines have very little to work with.
- Product imagery: high-quality, consistent shots from multiple angles, with clean backgrounds, give visual matching a fair chance.
- Attributes and tags: colour, style, room, material, size and use case should be filled in, not left empty.
- Structured data: correct schema markup helps platforms understand what each product is and who it is for.
- Landing experience: a visual ad that lands on a slow or confusing product page wastes the intent it just captured.
This is where a tailored ecommerce build pays off. A store configured around clean product data, fast pages and a checkout that does not leak customers will benefit from almost any new traffic source, visual or otherwise.
Beyond one new ad format
Pinterest also expanded its performance suite. Priority Products lets advertisers decide which items to push at strategic moments, such as seasonal launches or category campaigns, while keeping the efficiency of automation. Configurable A/B testing is now available directly inside the platform, so brands can experiment with campaign strategies and measure impact before committing budget to new creative or targeting. App Promotion adds a dedicated objective for campaigns focused on app installs.
There is also Restyle, a feature arriving in beta in the United States and Canada, which uses a photograph to reinterpret a space and compare options. It is another sign that the line between inspiration and decision is thinning.
A practical checklist for Catalan and Spanish retailers
Whether you sell from Lleida, Barcelona, Tarragona or Girona, the same principles apply. Start with the product feed: are your titles descriptive, your attributes complete and your images sharp? Then look at the destination. Under GDPR, any data you collect from advertising or remarketing must be handled with a clear legal basis and transparent consent, and that includes pixels and audience lists. Finally, measure properly. If you cannot attribute a sale to a channel, you cannot decide whether to scale it.
Visual search will not replace keyword advertising overnight, and no single format guarantees results. But the direction of travel is unmistakable. Platforms are moving towards understanding images, intent and context together, and the shops that win will be the ones whose product data, site speed and checkout are already in order. That is a foundation worth building regardless of which ad format comes next.
