The next shopper may not be a person
For two decades, ecommerce has been designed around a human being: someone who lands on a product page, scrolls through photos, reads reviews and finally taps the checkout button. That assumption is starting to crack. The big platform owners are opening their voice assistants and AI agents to third-party applications, allowing them to interpret a natural-language request and carry out real actions inside other apps — including checking an order status, booking a service or completing a purchase.

This is what the industry has started calling agentic commerce: instead of a customer navigating your catalogue, an AI agent does the browsing on their behalf. For a shop in Lleida, Barcelona or Girona, the practical question is not whether this trend is exciting, but whether your online store is technically ready to be read, understood and operated by software that is not a human browser.
What agentic commerce actually changes
The shift is subtler than it sounds. An AI assistant does not "look" at your homepage the way a person does. It works with structured information: product identifiers, prices, stock levels, delivery estimates, return conditions and the actions your store exposes. If that information lives only inside a beautiful but opaque page, the agent will either skip you or, worse, guess wrong.
Three consequences stand out for merchants:
- Discoverability moves from keywords to structured data. Rich product feeds and clean metadata become the language in which agents compare offers.
- Conversions can happen outside your interface. If an assistant can complete a purchase, your checkout must be robust enough to accept requests that never passed through your own funnel.
- Trust becomes machine-readable. Clear pricing, honest stock and transparent shipping are no longer just good manners; they are the inputs an agent uses to recommend you.
The European caveat nobody should ignore
There is an important nuance for Spanish and Catalan businesses. Some of these assistant integrations are being rolled out first in markets outside the European Union, while their availability on iPhone and iPad inside the EU remains blocked amid disagreements over the Digital Markets Act and interoperability requirements. In practice, this buys European merchants time — but not a reason to wait.
Regulation in the EU is pushing in the opposite direction: interoperability, data portability and fair access are the stated goals, and the assistants will eventually arrive. Stores that have already cleaned up their product data and their checkout will be the ones an agent can work with on day one. Those that have not will spend the first year of agentic commerce fixing plumbing.
Preparing a PrestaShop or WooCommerce store
Most of the groundwork is unglamorous and highly effective. At ALMC we approach it as a stack problem rather than a marketing one, because an AI agent will hit exactly the same weak points a demanding customer does — just faster and at scale.
- Product data hygiene: consistent attributes, GTIN or EAN codes, accurate dimensions, materials and compatibility. Ambiguity is what makes an agent recommend a competitor.
- Live stock and pricing: synchronise inventory so that what an assistant reads matches what your warehouse holds. Overselling to an automated buyer erodes trust quickly.
- Shipping and returns clarity: state delivery windows for Catalonia, the rest of Spain and the EU, plus return costs, in a structured and human-readable way.
- Checkout resilience: a fast, stable and well-instrumented checkout in PrestaShop or WooCommerce, ready to accept sessions that begin outside your site.
- Consent and GDPR: any agent acting on behalf of a customer touches personal data. Your consent flows, cookie handling and data-processing records must be beyond reproach.
Conversion optimisation still decides the winner
It is tempting to treat agentic commerce as a purely technical race. It is not. Even when an assistant narrows the choice, a human still approves the final purchase, and that human lands on your product page. If the page is slow, the photos are poor, the size guide is missing or the delivery promise is vague, the agent's recommendation dies at the last metre.
That is why we treat the two layers together: a well-structured catalogue that machines can parse, and a storefront that persuades people. In our experience with ecommerce projects across Catalonia, the merchants who gain most are those who optimise the conversion path — page speed, clear pricing, visible trust signals, a frictionless cart — while simultaneously exposing clean data to the outside world.
A realistic roadmap for the coming months
You do not need to rebuild your store overnight. A sensible sequence looks like this:
- Audit your product feed and fix the fields an agent would need to compare you fairly.
- Review your checkout for speed, error handling and payment coverage across Spain and the EU.
- Document your shipping, returns and privacy policies in plain, structured language.
- Measure everything, so that when assistant-driven traffic arrives you can tell it apart from organic and paid sessions.
- Keep an eye on EU developments, since the timing of assistant availability in Spain will shape how quickly this becomes mainstream.
Agentic commerce is not a distant fantasy, but neither is it a switch you flip. It is the logical next step for stores that already sell well and want to keep selling when the person on the other side of the transaction is, at least initially, a piece of software. Building an online shop that both humans and agents can trust is, in the end, the same job: clear information, solid technology and a checkout that never gets in the way.
