WhatsApp opens its calls to people without an account
For years, WhatsApp calls worked only between registered users. That has changed: the platform now allows guest calls, meaning anyone can join a voice or video conversation from a browser link without installing the app or creating an account. The organiser still needs WhatsApp, but the guest does not. For an online shop in Lleida, Barcelona or Tarragona, that small change removes one of the most stubborn barriers in customer communication: asking a buyer to install something before you can talk to them.

The calls are free, end-to-end encrypted and, according to the company, have no time limit. Group calls support up to 32 participants, which is more than enough for a support conversation, a supplier review or a short product demo.
How a guest call actually works
The flow is deliberately simple, and that is the point. The account holder opens the Calls tab, taps the plus icon and generates a call link. That link can be shared through WhatsApp or any other channel. The guest opens it in a desktop browser, types a name and waits in a virtual lobby until the organiser approves entry. The organiser keeps control at all times and can remove any guest.
- Guests can share their screen, use emoji reactions and raise a hand to ask for the floor.
- Guests cannot see other participants' phone numbers, send messages or add more people.
- Only registered users can create the link, so the shop keeps ownership of the conversation.
Meta has also said it plans integrations with Google and Outlook calendars, so call links could eventually be generated straight from a calendar invitation. That is a later phase, but it points in a clear direction: WhatsApp is moving from a messaging app towards a lightweight collaboration tool.
Why this matters for ecommerce in Spain
Spanish shoppers already use WhatsApp as a default channel for questions about stock, sizes, delivery times and returns. The problem was always the same: a customer browsing on a laptop at work does not want to install an app to ask whether a jacket is available in medium. Guest calls solve that friction. A shop can send a link, the customer clicks, and a real conversation starts in seconds.
This fits neatly into a broader ecommerce strategy. A well-built online store, whether on PrestaShop or WooCommerce, does the heavy lifting: catalogue, checkout, payments, shipping rules and GDPR-compliant consent management. But conversion rarely depends on the store alone. It depends on how quickly and how humanly you answer the doubt that is stopping the purchase. Guest calls turn a hesitant visitor into a conversation, and conversations close sales far more often than abandoned carts do.
Practical uses for a shop or brand
- Pre-sale advice: a customer comparing two products can share their screen and show exactly what they are looking at.
- Post-sale support: walk a buyer through a return, a warranty claim or a configuration issue without a chain of emails.
- B2B and wholesale: review an order, a price list or a delivery schedule with a retailer who does not use WhatsApp internally.
- Supplier and agency coordination: bring an external developer or logistics partner into a call without forcing them onto your stack.
The guest experience is limited by design, which is good for security. No phone numbers are exposed, no messages can be sent, and the organiser approves every entry. For a business handling customer data under GDPR, that control matters. Still, treat call links as you would any other access credential: share them only with the intended recipient, and avoid publishing them on public pages where anyone could request entry.
Where it fits in your stack
Guest calls are a communication layer, not a replacement for your store. The sensible approach is to connect them to the tools you already use: order management, CRM, helpdesk and analytics. If a call leads to a sale, that sale should be traceable in your ecommerce platform, not lost in a chat thread. This is where a customised PrestaShop or WooCommerce setup earns its keep, because it can log the customer journey, apply the right tax and shipping rules for Spain, and keep consent records in order.
Our advice is to start small. Pick one moment in the buying journey where customers hesitate, offer a guest call link there, and measure whether it moves the needle. If it does, extend it to support and B2B. If it does not, you have lost nothing but a few clicks. In ecommerce, the shops that win are rarely the ones with the longest feature list; they are the ones that remove friction fastest. Guest calls are a cheap, encrypted way to do exactly that.
