Retail media moves from the aisle to the online shop
For years, retail media was something only the big grocery chains and marketplaces could afford. Brands paid for sponsored placements on a retailer's shelves, physical or digital, and the retailer pocketed the margin. That model is now spreading fast across Spain, and it is changing what shop owners expect from their ecommerce platforms. The recent Retail Media Awards in Madrid, now in their third edition, are a good sign of how seriously the sector is taking this: categories range from brand-retailer collaboration to data and audience use, multichannel campaigns and AI-driven innovation. The message for any comerç in Lleida, Barcelona, Tarragona or Girona is simple: your online shop is no longer just a checkout. It is a media surface, a data source and a relationship channel all at once.

Why this matters for small and mid-sized ecommerce
You do not need to be a national retailer to feel the shift. Three things are happening at the same time:
- Advertising budgets are moving closer to the point of sale. Brands want measurable results, and few places are more measurable than a product page where someone is already deciding what to buy.
- First-party data has become the most valuable asset in digital marketing. With third-party cookies fading and GDPR compliance non-negotiable, the customer data you collect on your own shop is what lets you personalise, retarget and report properly.
- Shoppers expect a joined-up experience. They browse on a phone, compare on a laptop and collect in store. If your platform cannot keep up, they leave.
None of this works on a generic, plugin-heavy shop that nobody has tuned. It works on a platform that has been designed around your catalogue, your margins and your customer journeys.
PrestaShop and WooCommerce: two solid foundations, one requirement
In Catalonia, most ecommerce projects we see start from one of two platforms. PrestaShop is popular with retailers who need a structured back office, multi-store setups and fine-grained control over catalogues and carriers. WooCommerce is the natural choice when the shop grows out of a WordPress site and content, SEO and commerce need to live together.
Both can support retail media, advanced analytics and omnichannel logistics. The difference is not the platform itself but how it is implemented. A standard installation with a dozen unvetted modules will slow down, break during updates and leak data. A tailored build, with clean code, proper caching and a measured conversion funnel, will do the opposite. That is the core of what we do at ALMC.es: tiendas online that actually sell, built on PrestaShop or WooCommerce and optimised for conversion, not just for launch day.
The practical stack behind a shop that sells
Retail media hype aside, the fundamentals still decide whether an ecommerce project succeeds. In our experience with shops across Catalonia, the following layers matter most:
- Speed and stability. Hosting, caching and image optimisation are not optional. A slow product page kills conversion and ad performance alike.
- Clean product data. Structured titles, attributes, stock levels and pricing in euros, ready to feed marketplaces, comparison engines and retail media platforms.
- Consent-aware analytics. GDPR-compliant tracking that still gives you useful attribution. Consent mode and server-side tagging are now part of the baseline.
- Checkout friction removal. Local payment methods, transparent shipping costs, guest checkout and clear returns information. Small details, large impact.
- Automation. Abandoned cart flows, stock alerts, invoice generation and integration with your ERP or accounting software.
When these pieces are in place, retail media becomes an amplifier rather than a cost. You can measure which sponsored placements bring repeat customers, which audiences convert, and which campaigns simply cannibalise organic sales.
What to ask before investing in retail media
Before joining a retail media network or opening your product pages to brand advertising, ask yourself a few honest questions. Can your platform track a campaign from impression to delivery? Do you have a single customer view across web, store and email? Is your data policy clear enough to satisfy the AEPD if someone asks? And can your team manage the extra operational load without dropping the basics?
If the answer to any of these is no, the priority is the shop itself. A well-built ecommerce foundation turns retail media from a buzzword into a measurable revenue line. That is the work we focus on: solid PrestaShop and WooCommerce builds, conversion optimisation and the full stack needed to compete in Spanish ecommerce, from Lleida to the rest of Europe.
